This was the first season on a three year plant that CDFW had reintroduced these fish back to the Shasta Lake. After that it was whitecap city. I fished with Dave and Darryl from Redlands today. Guided Lewiston Lake the past few days, fishing overall was a little tough, quite a few quality fish around but with chrystal clear water and not much of an appitite, we had to work for them. Hopefully we will see more callibaetis during the day and or caddis in the evening.Lewiston Should continue to be productive well into the fall. We spent the day casting our flies to visibly feeding trout. Most of itwas sight-fishing, and we caught a LOT ofthem. Dave and Darryl boated at least 30 fish, with the biggest around 16. I spent the last 3 days on Lewiston lake with Al & Emil, the fishing was stellar, most of the Rainbow's were in the 12 - 14 range with a few up to 16. We kicked off the early spring in the Lime Saddle arm of Lake Oroville. Lewiston Lake is a great place to enjoy a relaxing day on the water. Unfortunately, we made the hard decision to take this year off from Whiskeytown Lake due to the excessive amount of copepods on the Kokanee and we elected to not put our clients on those fish. I took my client Kent from Tehachapi to Lewiston Lake. Water may be high in the rivers, but they're not the only game in town. So far we are seeing very healthy, clean and early fish coming over the rail. We had good luck with nymphs under indicators and dry fly and dropper techniques. I have often wondered whether the sores I have noticed on some fish were caused by Lamprey, last year I swore that I saw a fish swim by with a Lamprey attached, it was confirmed yesterday when I landed a fat 16 rainbow with a fat 10 lamprey firmly attached.The water in Lewiston Lake does not warm up in the summer like most lakes in the state, the water stays cool all summer and the fishing will be consistent through the Fall.Get off the couch and book now! These fish were allcaught on little nymphs underneath dry flies. Today we caught about as much at Lewiston Lake, but we did it in twelve-inch installments! The fish are spread out and not podded up like earlier in the season. We expect 2022 to be no different and look forward to getting back out there soon. Lake Oroville 2021 Recap Many reports stated the exterior appearance of the fish was very off-putting even though it does not effect the meat of the fish. We fished about five different spots and found fish everywhere we went. We had about an hour of good fishing before lunch when we could spot cruising fish. The highlight was sight-fishing to cruising rainbows with a dry-dropper rig. The weather was perfect and the crowds minimal but the fishing was slow. The dry fly action is limited to VERY technical midge fishing to smutten trout, why not they have a billion midge to choose from. Historically Shasta Lake was known for having a healthy populations of Kokanee.Additionally, we were able toput our clients on Rainbow Trout, Browns and Landlock Kings. Shasta Lake has developed into a fishery of epic proportions; meaning our clients have a high probability of bringing home a mix bag of high quality fish. The fish are fairly dispersed right now, but we were able to find some really concentrated pods as well. The trout are cruising in large pods right now and we were able to do a lot of sight-fishing. Burt even had a few grabs on his dry fly. Looking for the weather to stabilize and warm, with increased insect activity the natives should move back into the flats and offer some long awaited dry fly fishing! However, 2022 is a completely different story! We didn't find a lot of really big fish, but we more than made up for it with incredible numbers of hookups.
